How to Open a Thai Bank Account

And why the answer changes between branches.

There is no single national rule, which is why you will read ten different accounts of how easy this is. Branch discretion is real. What you can control is turning up with more documentation than anyone could reasonably ask for.

What to bring

  • Passport, with your current entry stamp and visa.
  • Proof of your Thai address — a lease, or a residence certificate from immigration.
  • Passport photographs.
  • A Thai mobile number, active and in your name where possible.
  • Any additional evidence of your long-stay status, such as an extension stamp.
  • Patience, and the willingness to try a different branch.

Why requirements vary

Banks apply national policy through local branches, and branch managers carry responsibility for accounts they open. A branch with experience of foreign customers is far more comfortable than one without. That is why the same bank can say no in one town and yes in another.

Once it is open

  • Set up mobile banking immediately — Thai banking apps are excellent and QR payment is everywhere.
  • Ask what a bank letter costs and how long one takes; you will need one for immigration.
  • If your visa route requires a seasoned deposit, keep that money in a separate account and do not touch it.
  • Keep your passbook, if you are issued one. It is still asked for.
