Over a twenty-year retirement, the difference between a good transfer method and a bad one is a large sum of money. It is worth half an hour of attention once, and then almost no attention afterwards.

The fee is not the cost

The visible transfer fee is usually the smaller part. The bigger cost is the exchange rate margin — the gap between the rate you are given and the real interbank rate. A “no fee” transfer with a 3% margin is expensive.

  • Always compare the total amount of baht that arrives, not the headline fee.
  • Check the rate against a neutral reference before you confirm.
  • Larger transfers usually get a better effective rate than many small ones.

The main options

MethodTypically good forWatch out for
Specialist transfer serviceRegular pension transfers and most lump sumsLimits on very large amounts; identity checks on the first transfer
Bank wire (SWIFT)Very large sums, and where specific coding is requiredPoor rates and multiple fees along the chain
Thai bank foreign currency accountHolding currency and converting when the rate suitsCharges, and the temptation to speculate
ATM withdrawalsDay-to-day cash onlyPer-transaction fees and poor rates; never a strategy

Coding matters more than people realise
